We love our pillows, we hate our pillows. If you are lucky, you have a pillow that is perfect for you. Not too soft, not too firm, not lumpy, not smelly . . . .just right.
Most of us have found out that our pillows change over time and either don’t feel good any more, or have just gotten to the point where they NEED to be replaced. Good luck finding a replacement ! Somehow we can never find that same pillow we remember. The new one (or more than one) just doesn’t work right any more. You wake up with neck pain or headaches, and toss and turn trying to get comfortable.
There are so many choices and options available, where do you start?
There are those pre-curved memory-foam pillows. But I have found that they work for some, but not for most people. The curves are a good idea, they match someone’s curve. But those curves typically don’t match YOUR curve. . . I usually recommend starting your search with a standard medium fill poly-fill pillow. They can give support, and they are easily adjusted to support your neck for a comfortable night’s sleep. I know many people like a down pillow. They are worth a try, but it is important to get one that has enough fill to give support. I haven’t heard many good/consistent results from “memory-foam” pillows. They tend to run too firm, and also too hot. Recently, several have tried the “My-Pillow” with good results. The design gives support while still providing comfort.
Don’t assume an expensive pillow is better just because you spent a fortune on it. Be patient and try a few different types to find which works best for you.
Picking the right pillow is just as important as HOW you use your pillow. Remember, it’s about neck support and position. The pillow needs to be the correct fill/firmness to keep your head fairly level with your body (side-sleeping), while at the same time, needs to have enough flexibility to be able to tuck under your neck for proper support. While sleeping on your back, your head should be lifted slightly and also have a little tuck under your neck for support as well. That is why someone cleverly designed those pillows with the curves already built in. It’s a great concept, there is neck support built in, and a hollow space for your head. If you are lucky, and the built-in curve fits YOU. If not, try the other pillows.
Remember, it comes down to comfort and support. When you find the right pillow for you, look forward to a better night’s sleep, and no pain when you wake up. If you think you found the best pillow for you, but you still have neck problems, that’s when you need to call your Chiropractor for help. If you have an underlying neck problem that needs care, even the best pillow won’t help. Get started on YOUR perfect night’s sleep today.
